A reproduction* of South Bend Lathe's cutter bit grinding fixture!
This new tool from Alisam Engineering is a reproduction* of South Bend Lathe Works cutter bit grinding block not in production for many years! Each grinding block will come with your choice of 2 square tool bit holders, (any of the other size tool holder/s are available separately as well). Tool holders come in 5 different sizes, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 and 1/2 inch to fit most quality, ground, square modern tool bits! (*We have increased the capacity of the tool holders by adding the 1/2 inch square tool bit size which was not available from SBL, in doing so we increased the overall size of the block and the diameter of the toolholders by about .19 inch. Thus our model will NOT interchange with the original*). Also comes with complete, detailed, easy instructions with cutter bit data sheet and an allen wrench.
Made from hard, quality, anodized, "Aicraft" aluminum with very accurate laser engraved indexing marks HERE IN THE USA, employing your neighbors on CNC equipment!
This tool is a favorite fixture for the home shop machinist, steam / gas model engine / train builder or gunsmith. The rare original is on many an Ebayer's watch list but selling at upwards of $300.00 is quite a purchase, IF FOUND! This little jig is not just for the South Bend Lathe owner! Use it on tool bits for ANY lathe OR Shaper using the 3/16 to 1/2 inch square cutter bits like such as, Atlas, Craftsman, Logan, Monarch, Hardinge, Enco, Emco, Prazi, Ammco, and the chinese imports.
The ease at which a machinist can now grind very accurate compound angles on their square tool bits / cutter bits is without comparison! Place your cutter bit in the appropriate sized tool holder, rotate the center tool holder to achieve the desired side / back / top rake angle, lock set screw and grind on your grinder or belt / disc sander! The block automatically creates a 10 degree clearance angle just like the original, (but may be placed flat to achieve a small degree of front clearance). See pics.!
